MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a grand jury indicted a Hempstead man for allegedly shooting and killing a Roosevelt man in October 2018.

Savonn Dangerfield, 22, was arraigned Monday before Judge William O’Brien and charged with Murder in the Second Degree (an A-I felony) and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). The defendant was remanded and is due back in court August 9. If convicted of the top count, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

“This defendant is charged with brazenly shooting and killing an unarmed 23-year-old man as he walked with his girlfriend near a Hempstead school,” DA Singas said. “Though he tried to run from this horrific murder, he was apprehended in Ohio, and will now be held to account for the depraved violence alleged in this indictment.”

DA Singas said on October 12, 2018, at approximately 12:07 pm, the victim, 23-year-old Jeffrey Lee of Roosevelt, was walking with his girlfriend on Dartmouth Street in Hempstead when he was allegedly approached by the defendant at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and shot three times. The victim was later transported to Winthrop Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Multiple shell cases belonging to a 9mm semi-automatic pistol were recovered at the scene. The defendant allegedly fled the scene.

Following an investigation, the defendant was arrested on May 13, 2019, by police in Steubenville, Ohio, and later extradited to Nassau County for arraignment.

Stefanie Palma of DA Singas’ Major Offense Bureau and Brittany Gurrieri of the Special Operations Narcotics and Gangs Bureau are prosecuting this case. Cheryl Bartow, Esq. represents the defendant.

The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
