Hempstead Man Convicted for 2016 Shooting

Christopher Glass

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Hempstead man was convicted today of a number of charges related to the shooting of his sister’s boyfriend in July 2016.

Christopher Glass, 40, was convicted by a jury of:

  • Attempted Assault in the First Degree (a C violent felony)
  • Assault in the Second Degree (a D violent felony)
  • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C felony)
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (a D felony)
  • Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree (a D felony)
  • Assault in the Third Degree (an A misdemeanor)

The trial started on April 19 and the jury deliberated for approximately four hours. Bail was set at $500,000 bond or $500,000 cash and the defendant is due back for sentencing before Acting Supreme Court Justice Meryl Berkowitz on May 24. He faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced.

“This defendant could have killed his victim when he shot him in the chest, causing permanent injuries with a bullet that cannot safely be removed,” DA Singas said. “We are committed to aggressively fighting gun violence in Nassau County. Thanks to the work of the Nassau County Police Department and our prosecutors, this defendant will be held accountable for this heinous crime.”

DA Singas said that at approximately 5:05 a.m. on July 29, 2016, the victim arrived at an apartment building on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead to speak to his girlfriend, Glass’s sister. The defendant went outside and asked the victim to approach so that they could speak. Glass drew a handgun and fired two shots, hitting the victim in the chest.

The defendant fled the scene and the victim was taken to Winthrop Hospital with serious gunshot injuries and remained hospitalized for a day. Following an investigation, Glass was arrested in Hempstead on February 7, 2017, by members of the Nassau County Police Department.

The victim bullet remains lodged in the victim’s chest as doctors determined that it was too dangerous to extract.

Senior Assistant District Attorneys Tracy Keeton and Rachael Whalen of DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau are prosecuting the case. The defendant is represented by Donald Rollock, Esq.
